Conservation Congress Bill Moves Forward

May 5, 2009

Springfield, IL.…State Representatives John Cavaletto (R – Salem) and David Reis (R – Ste. Marie) have sponsored a bill to encourage the Department of Natural Resources to reconstitute the Conservation Congress. HR 275 unanimously passed the House Agriculture and Conservation committee on Tuesday.

“The resolution urges the Department of Natural Resources to convene the Conservation Congress in a manner and time frame permitted by the Department’s monetary and personnel resources. We want the focus of future Conservation Congress’ to be to assist in the protection, conservation, education and appropriate use of Illinois rich natural resources,” Cavaletto said. “I believe it is time to start making the efforts of DNR a priority of state government again.”

Cavaletto and Reis were joined by DNR Director Marc Miller for the bill’s presentation. Following a period of deep cuts and some controversy at DNR, Reis said he is happy to see the return of cooperation between the Department and the legislature.

“This resolution looks to the future of conservation in the state of Illinois,” Reis said. “I am looking forward to working with Director Miller to bring conservation specialists from across the state together to help improve communication with constituents and protect and conserve the natural resources of the state.”

The resolution will now head to the full House of Representatives for consideration.
